Planning around the profile photo
The profile photo covers part of the header on your profile page, so that part of the header image is never fully visible. Keep text and faces away from where it sits and check the preview after uploading.
Because the overlap depends on the device, a simple background with a short line of text near the centre is easier to keep readable than a busy design.
Still images only
X lists GIF as an accepted format but says animated GIFs are not supported for header photos. Export a still frame instead.
X's help page gives no file size limit for headers. A 1500 × 500 JPG is usually small, so file size rarely matters here.
Tips
- Design at 1500 × 500 and keep the main message in the middle of the frame.
- Use PNG for headers made of flat colours or text, and JPG for photos.
- Match the header's colours to your profile photo so the overlap looks deliberate.
- Check your profile on a phone after changing the header, since the width differs from a computer.
Common mistakes
- Uploading an animated GIF and expecting it to move.
- Using a 16:9 photo, which is much taller than 3:1 and loses much of its height.
- Putting a handle or slogan where the profile photo covers it.
- Placing text against the left or right edge, which can be trimmed on some screens.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a Twitter header?
X's help page recommends 1500 × 500 pixels, a 3:1 ratio. The same image is called a header or a banner.
Is there a file size limit for X headers?
X's help page does not state one for header photos. Keeping the file small still helps it load quickly.
Can my X header be a GIF?
You can upload a GIF, but X does not support animated GIFs for headers, so use a still image.
What size is an X profile photo?
X recommends 400 × 400 pixels, as a JPG, GIF or PNG. Animated GIFs are not supported there either.
Why is my X header cropped?
The header is shown at different widths on different screens, so the edges can be trimmed, and the profile photo covers part of it. Keep important content near the centre.
